Tournament Week Tees Off with The RBC Canadian Open 5K Golf Run
Oakville, ON – Tournament Week officially began with the running of the inaugural RBC Canadian Open 5K Golf Run at Glen Abbey Golf Club. Three hundred sixty-one runners and walkers of all ages gathered together to participate in an event never done before at the grounds of the Canada’s national championship.
“It was so exciting to be involved with this first ever event ultimately bringing together the world of the great game of golf and the sport recreational running,” says Elliott Kerr, Race Chairman and President of Landmark Sport Group Inc., organizers of the RBC Canadian Open 5K Golf Run. “After the showing of support this morning, we are incredibly pleased with how the event was received by all participants and we are confident that it will continue to grow over the coming years.”
The RBC Canadian Open 5K Golf Run allowed participants to experience Glen Abbey like never before and just days ahead of the pros. All runners and walkers began their route near the first tee of the Championship Course and then made their way around the Glen Abbey course before ultimately finishing alongside the beautiful and iconic 18th green. After finishing their race and receiving their finisher’s medal, all participants and spectators were invited to cool down and relax in the Molson Canadian 67 19th Hole Beer Garden. All participants were encouraged to watch live the third round of The British Open Championship on the televisions located around the Beer Garden as well as get their photo taken alongside the impressive RBC Canadian Open Trophy.
“The success of this new event could not have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, partners, sponsors, and of course Golf Canada.” explained Brody Coles, Race Director for the RBC Canadian Open 5K Golf Run. “It takes a lot of people all working together to pull off an event like this and we are so grateful for the effort put forth by everyone involved. We cannot wait to being planning for year two.”
Taking a look at the competitive side of things, Connor Hammond from Oakville, Ontario & Stephanie Macneill from also from Oakville, Ontario earned the distinct honours of being crowned the first ever Male and Female winners of the RBC Canadian Open 5K with times of 17:31.3 and 17.52.8, respectively. Dozens of athletes were awarded for placing within their respective age and gender categories but every finisher received their own piece of hardware to symbolize their personal achievement – the finisher’s medal. No matter how quickly you finished this event, every registered participant was rewarded with a free ‘any single day’ ticket to the RBC Canadian Open Tournament.
